Apiam Swine Vets attend Australian Pig Vet Conference

Members of our Apiam Swine Services veterinary team attended the Australian Pig Vet (APV) conference held from the 17th to 19th July on the Sunshine Coast. The annual veterinary conference attracted 80 delegates from across the country with presentations occurring over three days. Presentation topics ranged from batch farrowing in large systems, appropriate antimicrobial use, welfare standards and case discussions on pathogens including Klebsiella pneumonia, Erysipelas, Encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) and the global eradication of Bungowannah virus.

Apiam swine veterinarians Dr Kate Savage and Dr John Carr presented on their experiences with Streptococcus equi zooepidemicus (SEZ) locally and internationally. Dr Robert Suter also presented on customising autogenous vaccines; a service provided by our lab, ACE Laboratories.

Head of La Trobe University’s Department of Animal, Plant and Soil Science Professor Travis Beddoe presented on the science and technology behind the latest Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JE) vaccine collaboration between La Trobe University and Apiam.

The conference was successful, with plenty of opportunities for networking with colleagues and industry partners. We would like to congratulate our swine veterinarian, Dr Nandi van Wyk, for stepping onto the APV committee for the coming year and thank Dr Susan Dawson for all her hard work as past president this year and president for three years prior to that.

If you would like to hear more about what was discussed at the APV conference, please reach out to your Apiam swine veterinarian.
