Apiam recently sponsored and attended the Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprises (TSBE) Protein 2023 conference held in Dalby in late March.
The conference brought together all four intensive animal industries – beef, pork, poultry and dairy – with the view to share best practice, advocate for common policy change and allow collaboration across the sectors.
Six sessions were held throughout the day focused on biosecurity, sustainability, animal welfare, new energy, production improvements with shedded systems, demystifying carbon markets and net zero targets.
Apiam Feedlot Services veterinarian and Dalby local Dr Jemma Postle joined a panel of four during the animal welfare session which sparked engaging conversation with the audience and between panel members.
“Our collective goal is to provide animals with a great life,” Dr Postle said.
“How is this done? What is the recipe for a good life?”
“It is achieved by minimising negative affective states and maximising positive affective states by addressing the areas of the five-domain model and also ensuring a humane death.”
“The work my colleagues and I do through ProFeedlot, but also the other sectors of Apiam such as ProSwine and ProDairy, is to partner with our clients and their teams to guide and arm them in maximising the positive affective states of the animals within these industries.”
We also had several members of the Apiam Swine and Feedlot Services teams available at the Apiam stand to discuss all things production animal health.
The conference was well attended, and we thank TSBE for the opportunity to sponsor the event.
